In the pursuit of sustainable gardening practices, there's a growing emphasis on eco-friendly methods that minimize waste and reduce the environmental impact of your gardening. From repurposing materials to embracing naturally-derived alternatives, there are numerous ways to sow seeds and grow plants more sustainably.

Let's explore some environmentally friendly techniques for planting, including innovative recycled methods:

Homemade Seed Pots from Recycled Materials:

One of the simplest ways to reduce waste while planting seeds is by making your own seed pots from recycled materials. Consider using old newspapers, cardboard toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, or yoghurt containers. Easy to source and usually readily available, this free method avoids the need to buy flimsy plastic pots for seedlings.

Materials like scrap paper or toilet roll tubes can be easily transformed into biodegradable seed pots that can be planted directly into the soil, minimizing transplant shock for delicate seedlings.

Take a look at Garden Betty’s post here. Their detailed yet simple how to guide shows an easy method for making seed pots out of newspaper without the need of a fancy paper pot press. Our team's favourite method is an adaptation on this, using a loo roll instead of a can, which produces equally satisfying and oddly therapeutic results!

Seed Tape and Mats:

Seed tapes and mats are convenient alternatives to traditional seed planting methods. These pre-seeded strips are made from biodegradable materials and are pre-spaced for easy sowing and optimal growth. Eliminate the need for thinning seedlings and reduce seed waste by using seed tapes.

Compostable Seed Starters:

There are many compostable seed starter options on the market - from organic materials such as sustainably sourced peat, coconut coir, and recycled paper pulp. These biodegradable pots provide a nutrient-rich environment for seedlings to thrive and can be planted directly into the soil once the plants outgrow their containers, reducing the need to pot seedlings on. Investment in biodegradable starter sets and plugs can be a good way to grow from seed whilst also putting organic matter into your soil when they degrade over time - a beginners option to soil blocking!

Soil Blocking:

Soil blocking, also known as seed blocking, is a gardening technique that utilises a press to compact compost into growing blocks. Similar to growing in a tray, seed blocking grows without the need for individual cells whilst supporting the seedling with pressed compost. These sustainable blocks provide a natural environment for seeds to germinate and seedlings to grow, reducing plastic waste that usually occurs with flimsy plastic cells.

Seed blocking is also beneficial to your plants as well as the environment, promoting healthier root development and reducing transplant shock, resulting in stronger, more resilient plants.

Seed Bombs and Guerrilla Gardening:

Join the guerrilla gardening movement by creating seed bombs—a mixture of seeds, compost, and clay rolled into small balls and dried. Seed bombs can be strategically dispersed in neglected urban areas, vacant lots, or roadside verges to promote biodiversity and beautify neglected spaces. This method can be used in your own garden to sow wildflower or annual seeds, creating a carefree way to direct sow seeds.

Reclaimed Wood or Pallet Planters:

Repurposing reclaimed wood or pallets into planters is not only environmentally friendly but also adds rustic charm to your garden. These planters can be customized to fit any space and are perfect for growing herbs, flowers, and vegetables. Ensure that the wood has not been chemically treated and is safe for growing plants, and consider lining the planter with a breathable fabric to prevent soil erosion. If you’re handy with tools, building your own bespoke planters, either big or small, can be a rewarding sustainable hobby.

Final Thoughts

By embracing environmentally friendly seed planting techniques, gardeners can nurture both their plants and the planet. Whether you're sowing seeds in homemade pots, repurposing reclaimed materials, or just reusing the same old pots year after year, every green initiative contributes to a more sustainable future.

Happy Planting!
